    Biography

    Youth, vocation, and priestly ordination of Ottorino Zanon in Vicenza.

    Ottorino Zanon was born on August 9, 1915, in Anconetta, near Vicenza in Italy, into a modest family. The only survivor of four children, he grew up in faith and simplicity. Attracted to the priesthood at a very young age, he entered the diocesan seminary of Vicenza in 1927. Marked by the unexplained healing of his mother in Lourdes in 1928, he pursued his studies with fervor and was ordained a priest on May 26, 1940, by the Bishop of Vicenza, Msgr. Ferdinando Rodolfi.

    Appointed vicar at the parish of Araceli in Vicenza, Father Ottorino Zanon immediately dedicated himself to needy and orphaned youth. In 1941, he opened the first reception house, which would become the Saint Gaetano Institute (Istituto San Gaetano), offering shelter and vocational training (mechanics, carpentry, typography) to young people in difficulty. During the Second World War, he protected many persecuted individuals and refugees. To perpetuate his work, he founded the Pious Society of Saint Gaetano (Pia Società San Gaetano), a congregation of priests and deacons dedicated to the apostolate among workers and the marginalized.

    Father Ottorino Zanon dedicated all his energy to the development of his congregation, which expanded rapidly in Italy and abroad, particularly in Latin America. His ministry was characterized by boundless charity, absolute trust in Providence, and profound humility. On September 14, 1972, while traveling to visit his communities, he died tragically in a road accident in Brescia, leaving behind a testimony of holiness and total self-giving.

    The cause for the beatification and canonization of Father Ottorino Zanon was opened in the Diocese of Vicenza in 1999. After the diocesan inquiry into his life and virtues, the file was transmitted to Rome. On June 5, 2015, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree recognizing his heroic virtues, thereby conferring upon him the title of Venerable.
