Teresa Toda Juncosa was born on August 19, 1826, in Riudecanyes, Spain. The eldest of five children, she supported her mother after the death of her father when she was 13 years old. On July 7, 1847, she married Antonio Guasch Doménech, who quickly proved to be violent and idle. To protect her only daughter, Teresa Guasch Toda, born in 1848, she initiated an exceptional separation proceeding before the ecclesiastical courts of Tarragona. After winning her case, she settled in Tarragona, where she led a life of piety under the spiritual direction of José Caixal y Estradé and Avostino Verdura, while discerning her religious vocation.
