THE SAINTS AMATOR, PETER, LOUIS, AND JOHN, MARTYRS IN CORDOBA (855).
Historical context and source
Saint Eulogius of Cordoba reports the martyrdom of four Christians executed by the Moors in the year 855.
Saint Eulogi us, bishop and martyr of Cord oba, in Spain, has preserved for us the names of four heroic confessors, whose blood the Moors shed in the year 855.
Origins of Saint Amator
Amator, a young priest originally from Martos, settles in Cordoba with his family to pursue his studies.
The first and most intrepid was a young priest, named Amator, who h ad left his small provincial town — the village of Ma rtos — and had gone, with his family, to Cordoba, to pursue his studies there.
Martyrdom and companions
Amator, Peter, and Ludovic are put to death for attempting to convert Muslims; their bodies are thrown into the Guadalquivir.
His companions in martyrdom were a monk named Peter, and Ludovic, both born in Cordob a to bo urgeois families. They had devoted themselves, out of zeal, to the conversion of the Mahometans; but the execution of this project put the enemies of the faith into such a fury that they fell upon them and slaughtered them. Their bodies were thrown into the Gu adalquivir, the river that flows through Cordoba. Christians from various localities gathered them and gave them burial. They are honored with a public cult in Cordoba, where they have a specific office of the semi-double rite.
Burials and posterity
The bodies of the martyrs were recovered by the faithful and buried in various places, notably at the monastery of Saint-Sauveur and in Martos.
The blessed Peter was buried at the monastery of Saint-Sauveur, almost at the gates of Cordoba, and the blessed Ludovic a few miles from there, in the town of Palma, whose counts often took the name of Louis, out of devotion to this glorious Martyr.
As for the blessed Amator, he wa s tran sported to his homeland, which changed its name in his memory and took that of Martos, an al teration of Amator. To these three Martyrs is added the blessed Joh n, w ho is not named by the Roman Martyrology.
