    Biography

    Birth in Nigeria, conversion to Christianity, education and priestly ordination in 1937.

    Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi was born in September 1903 in Igboezunu, a village in Aguleri, Nigeria. His parents, Tabansi and Ejikwevi, practiced the traditional religion. Raised by his Christian uncle from the age of seven, he was baptized under the name Michael on January 7, 1912, by Father Rubino. Marked by his baptism, he destroyed his traditional amulet. During his childhood, he lost the use of his left eye during a game. Having become a teacher and then a school principal in 1924, he entered the seminary in 1925 and was ordained a priest on December 19, 1937, by Archbishop Charles Heerey.

    Father Michael Tansi exercised his ministry in the Archdiocese of Onitsha, notably in Nnewi, Dunukofia, Akpu/Ajalli, and Aguleri. He devoted himself entirely to the poor and the sick, traveling long distances on foot or by bicycle. He placed major importance on the sanctification of families and the dignity of women, founding marriage preparation centers to combat trial marriages. His example inspired numerous vocations, including that of the future Cardinal Francis Arinze.

    Path to Holiness

    Entry into the Trappist order in England, contemplative life, and death in 1964.

    Desiring a contemplative life, Father Tansi joined the Trappist Abbey of Mount Saint Bernard in England in 1950. Under the name Brother Cyprian, he made his solemn vows in 1956. There, he led a life of prayer, asceticism, and manual labor, hoping to establish a Trappist monastery in Nigeria. Afflicted by a serious cardiovascular illness, he died on January 20, 1964, at the Royal Infirmary of Leicester.

    Beatification and canonization

    Repatriation of his relics, recognized miracle, and beatification by John Paul II in 1998.

    His cause for canonization was introduced in 1979 by Archbishop Francis Arinze. In 1986, his remains were repatriated to Nigeria. During this transfer, the unexplained healing of a young girl from her incurable tumor was recorded after she touched his coffin. This miracle paved the way for his beatification, celebrated on March 22, 1998, by Pope John Paul II in Oba, making him the first blessed of Nigeria.

Proclaimed patron of Nigerian priests in 2010, his name is borne by several institutions, including the provincial major seminary of Onitsha.
