Biography
Youth, vocation, and priestly ordination of Mosè Tovini.
Blessed Mosè Tovini was born on December 27, 1877, in Cividate Camuno, in Lombardy (Italy). The eldest of eight children of Eugenio Tovini and Domenica Malaguzzi, his godfather was his uncle Giuseppe Tovini, a famous lawyer beatified in 1998. At a very young age, he moved to Brescia to study. Despite his father's initial opposition, his priestly vocation was confirmed, particularly after the celebrations of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga in 1891. Thanks to his uncle's support, he entered the seminary of Brescia. After an interruption for his military service as a sergeant, he was ordained a priest on June 9, 1900, by Bishop Giacomo Corna-Pellegrini. He continued his studies in Rome, obtaining doctorates in mathematics and philosophy, as well as a licentiate in theology, while dedicating himself to the poor of the Roman countryside.
Life and work
Teaching ministry, pastoral commitment, and direction of the Brescia seminary.
Returning to Brescia in 1904, Father Mosè taught mathematics, philosophy, sociology, apologetics, and dogmatic theology at the diocesan seminary. Among his students was the young Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI. In 1905, he joined the Congregation of the Oblate Priests of the Holy Family. At the same time, he became involved in catechesis, cared for the sick during the Spanish flu (1917-1918), and accompanied seminarians returning from the front. Diocesan assistant for Catholic Action from 1921 to 1926, he founded its men's branch in 1922. Appointed rector of the seminary in 1926, he exercised his office with gentleness and firmness until his death, which occurred on January 28, 1930, following bilateral pneumonia.
