Luigi Domenico Filippo Talamoni was born in Monza, in Lombardy, on October 3, 1848 (or October 2, according to some sources). The second of six children of Giuseppe Talamoni and Maria Angelica Sala, he grew up in a modest and pious family. Admitted in 1862 to the "seminary for the poor" founded by Father Luigi Villoresi, he continued his theological studies in Milan. Ordained a priest on March 4, 1871, by Archbishop Luigi Nazari di Calabiana, he began his ministry by teaching at the San Carlo College in Milan, then became a professor of literature at the seminary of Monza in 1875.
Life and Work
Foundation of the Misericordine Sisters of Saint Gerard and civic engagement.
In 1891, sensitive to the distress of the poor sick, Father Luigi partnered with Maria Biffi to found the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of Saint Gerard, which was approved in 1902. Alongside his role as a diligent confessor at the Monza Cathedral, he became involved in local politics. Elected as a municipal councilor of Monza from 1893 to 1916, and again in 1923, he worked for the creation of schools, housing for the poor, and the distribution of free medicine, before resigning in the face of the rise of fascism.
