Biography
Birth and youth of Mariano de Jesús Euse Hoyos in Yarumal, within a deeply Christian family.
Mariano de Jesús Euse Hoyos, affectionately nicknamed "Padre Marianito" by his faithful, was born on October 14, 1845, in Yarumal, in the Diocese of Antioquia in Colombia. He was the eldest of a deeply Christian family of seven children, born to the union of Pedro Euse and Rosalie de Hoyos. His surname, Euse, bears witness to a distant French origin: his ancestor, Pedro Euse, had indeed emigrated from Normandy. Baptized the day after his birth, little Mariano received the sacrament of confirmation at only two years of age. His parents, very pious, were wary of the public school of the time, which they considered hostile to the Church and sectarian. They therefore made the decision to provide the instruction of their eldest son themselves within the family home. It was in this setting that Mariano learned to read, to write, as well as the rudiments of the sciences and Christian virtues. Very early on, the young boy showed great generosity by voluntarily teaching reading and writing to the poor children of his region. Having spent all his childhood and adolescence working in the countryside alongside his parents, he retained at the age of sixteen the appearance and simplicity of a peasant. This experience of rural life would prove to be decisive for the rest of his pastoral ministry among rural populations.
Life and Work
Priestly formation of Mariano de Jesús Euse Hoyos and his long pastoral ministry in Angostura.
Desiring from a young age to dedicate his life to God following the example of his uncle, Father Firmin de Hoyos (Fermín Hoyos)—a parish priest of Girardota renowned for his learning and piety—Mariano joined him at the age of sixteen to begin his spiritual and intellectual formation. He then accompanied his uncle when the latter was transferred to the parish of San Pedro. By his side, Mariano led a simple and rigorous life, shared between study, manual labor, and assiduous prayer. In 1869, at the age of 24, he was admitted to the Major Seminary of Medellín, which had just opened its doors, to complete his theological studies. He received priestly ordination on July 14, 1872. His first post was that of vicar (coadjutor) to his uncle in San Pedro. This collaboration was short-lived, as Father Firmin passed away in January 1875. Mariano was then appointed vicar in his hometown of Yarumal, and later, in 1876, in Angostura. He subsequently became the titular parish priest of this parish of Angostura, which he had obtained through a competitive examination, and spent the rest of his life there, totaling nearly fifty years of uninterrupted ministry. Upon his arrival in Angostura, the young priest had to face significant material and spiritual challenges. The construction of the parish church was then completely halted due to a lack of funds, technical difficulties, and unrest linked to the threats of civil war in the region. Thanks to remarkable patience and constant efforts, Mariano managed to complete the construction of the temple. He also realized other major parish infrastructures: his own dwelling house, the bell tower, the chapels dedicated to the Virgin of Carmel and Saint Francis, as well as the local cemetery.
Journey toward holiness
The boundless charity, radical poverty, and intense prayer life of Padre Marianito until his death in 1926.
The ministry of Padre Marianito was characterized by boundless charity and an absolute detachment from material goods. He showed a marked predilection for the poorest and the marginalized, whom he affectionately called the "nobles of Christ." He did not hesitate to use his own resources to help them. His personal poverty was so radical that at the end of his life, his parishioners had to provide him with clean linen, as he had given away everything he owned and had nothing left. With immense availability, he regularly visited the sick and was ready to administer the sacraments to them at any hour of the day or night. His intense and constant life of prayer was the sole source of his apostolic zeal. He strove to promote popular piety, notably through the daily recitation of the rosary with the family, devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the development of Catholic parish associations. After long years of robust health that had allowed him to practice harsh mortifications and frequent fasts, he was struck by a serious bladder illness in June 1926, which forced him to remain bedridden permanently. On his deathbed, he uttered these final words: "I have already lived enough. My greatest desire now is to go and unite myself with my Jesus." He passed away holily on July 13, 1926, in Angostura.
Beatification and canonization
The beatification process of Mariano de Jesús Euse Hoyos, celebrated by Pope John Paul II in 2000.
The reputation for holiness of Padre Marianito, already firmly established during his lifetime, spread rapidly after his death, carried by the devotion of the inhabitants of Angostura and the surrounding regions. His cause for beatification was officially introduced on October 10, 1980. On March 3, 1990, Pope John Paul II promulgated the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, thus conferring upon him the title of Venerable. A miracle attributed to his intercession—the scientifically inexplicable healing of a sick person—was officially approved by the Holy See in 1999. Pope John Paul II celebrated his solemn beatification on April 9, 2000, in Saint Peter's Square in Rome. Through this act, the Church proposed Padre Marianito as a model of holiness for the secular clergy and as the first priest born and deceased on Colombian territory to be raised to the honors of the altars.
Spirituality and legacy
The spiritual legacy of Padre Marianito, often compared to the Curé of Ars, and his devotion in Colombia.
The spirituality of Blessed Mariano de Jesús Euse Hoyos is based on evangelical simplicity, a preferential love for the poor, and absolute fidelity to the duties of his priestly state. Often compared to the Holy Curé of Ars due to his pastoral dedication in a rural setting, he demonstrated that holiness is acquired through the humble and daily fulfillment of parish ministry. His spiritual legacy remains extremely vibrant in Colombia, particularly in the department of Antioquia. The parish church of Angostura, where his body rests, has become a sanctuary and a major place of pilgrimage for thousands of faithful who come to seek his intercession. He is invoked as the patron of rural workers and peasants, as well as a privileged intercessor for peace in Colombia.
