    Biography

    Birth in Chiavari, religious education by his aunts, and entry into the Order of Friars Minor of the Observance.

    Blessed Baldassarre Ravaschieri (sometimes Gallicized as Balthasar of Chiavari) was born in 1419 (or 1420) in Chiavari, in the Republic of Genoa. Descended from the noble Ravaschieri family, he lost his father, Count Cattaneo, in 1421. His aunts, Ginevra and Tobia, both Franciscan tertiaries, took charge of his religious education. Attracted by the ideal of Saint Francis of Assisi, he entered the Order of Friars Minor of the Observance at the convent in his hometown, where he studied theology, obtained his doctorate, and was ordained a priest.

    Recognized for his theological knowledge, Baldassarre Ravaschieri became guardian of the convent of Chiavari, then provincial vicar of the Franciscan province of Genoa. A zealous preacher and sought-after confessor, he was struck by a severe form of gout that left him almost completely paralyzed. He retired to the convent of Santa Maria in Campo in Binasco. Carried by his confreres to attend Mass and hear confessions, he became the spiritual guide of Blessed Veronica of Binasco and formed a friendship with Bernardino of Feltre.

    His life in Binasco is a testimony of heroic patience in the face of suffering, which he offered for the salvation of souls. His reputation attracted many faithful. Tradition reports that one winter day, while he was alone in the convent garden during a snowstorm, the exact spot where he was sitting remained perfectly dry. After six years of suffering, he passed away on October 17, 1492, at the age of 72.

    Beatification and canonization

    Popular cult, transfer of his relics, and confirmation of his cult by Pope Pius XI in 1930.

    After his death, a spontaneous cult developed. His body was placed in a tomb sculpted by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo. In 1805, following the suppression of the convent, his relics were transferred to Pavia, then in 1812 to Baselica Bologna (Giussago), where they are preserved. A relic of his arm is venerated in Chiavari. Pope Pius XI officially confirmed his cult on January 8, 1930, elevating him to the rank of blessed for the Franciscan Order and the dioceses of Genoa and Pavia.
