    Biography

    Birth in Germany, entry into the Jesuits, service during the First World War, and higher studies in Poland.

    Eduard Gottlieb Profittlich was born on September 11, 1890, in Birresdorf, in the Rhineland, into a family of Catholic farmers. He was the eighth of ten children of Markus Profittlich and Dorothea Catharina Seiwert. After his secondary studies, he chose to enter the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Heerenberg in 1913, following the example of his older brother Peter. His philosophy and theology studies in Valkenburg were interrupted by the First World War, during which he served as a military medic. Ordained a priest on August 27, 1922, he obtained doctorates in philosophy and theology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow before exercising his ministry in Opole and Hamburg.

    Mission in Estonia, appointment as Apostolic Administrator and then the first resident Catholic archbishop since the Reformation.

    In 1930, Father Profittlich was sent to Estonia, where the Catholic community was a very small minority. Appointed Apostolic Administrator by Pope Pius XI in 1931, he breathed new life into pastoral care: training the clergy, founding parishes, obtaining Estonian citizenship, and publishing religious materials in the local language. On November 27, 1936, he was appointed titular Archbishop of Adrianople and consecrated in Tallinn, becoming the first resident Catholic bishop in Estonia since the Protestant Reformation.

    Soviet occupation of Estonia, refusal of exile, arrest by the NKVD, and death in deportation at the Kirov prison.

    During the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940, Bishop Profittlich refused to leave his flock despite the risks. Arrested by the NKVD on the night of June 26 to 27, 1941, he was deported to the Kirov prison in Russia. Subjected to violent interrogations and sentenced to death for espionage and anti-Soviet activities, he died of exhaustion on February 22, 1942, before his execution, a victim of deprivation and mistreatment.

    Beatification and canonization

    Opening of the cause in 2003, recognition of martyrdom in 2024, and solemn beatification in Tallinn in 2025.

    The cause for beatification, opened in 2003, progressed until the official recognition of his martyrdom by Pope Francis on December 18, 2024. On September 6, 2025, Bishop Profittlich was solemnly beatified at Freedom Square in Tallinn during a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn on behalf of Pope Leo XIV. He thus became the very first blessed in the history of the Catholic Church in Estonia, with his liturgical feast day set for February 21.

    Spirituality and legacy

    Ignatian spirituality, episcopal motto Fides et pax, and memory honored in Estonia as a symbol of resistance.

    Inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius, the spirituality of Bishop Profittlich is based on his episcopal motto 'Fides et pax' (Faith and peace). His choice to remain with his faithful illustrates his vision of the pastor ready to give his life for his flock. Venerated by all of Estonian society as a symbol of spiritual resistance against totalitarianism, his memory is honored by a plaque and a dedicated chapel in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Tallinn.
