Biography

Born on April 14, 1911, in Velykyi Bychkiv, Theodore George Romzha grew up in a modest family. His father, Pavel, was a railway employee, and his mother, Maria Semack, took care of the home. After his studies in Khust, he was sent to Rome in 1930. He studied at the Germanic-Hungarian College and then at the Pontifical Russian College (Russicum), and attended philosophy and theology courses at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained a priest on December 25, 1936, by Bishop Aleksander Evreinov in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

Returning in July 1937, he completed his military service and then became administrator of the parishes of Berezovo and Nyzhnii Bystryi in 1938. In 1939, he taught philosophy at the Uzhhorod seminary. On September 24, 1944, he was ordained a bishop and appointed apostolic administrator of the Eparchy of Mukachevo. Faced with the Soviet annexation and Stalin's pressures to liquidate the Greek Catholic Church in favor of the Russian Orthodox Church, Bishop Romzha refused to break communion with Rome and firmly supported his faithful.

The Soviet authorities, under the impetus of Khrushchev and Stalin, decided to eliminate the bishop. On October 27, 1947, his carriage was struck by a Soviet military truck and he was violently beaten. Treated at the Mukachevo hospital, he was finally murdered by a curare injection administered by a nurse under the orders of the NKVD during the night of October 31 to November 1, 1947.
Beatification and canonization
Recognition of martyrdom and beatification by John Paul II.
On April 24, 2001, Pope John Paul II recognized his martyrdom in odium fidei. He was beatified on June 27, 2001, in Lviv during a Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine rite. In June 2003, his relics were transferred to the Holy Cross Cathedral in Uzhhorod to be venerated there.
