    Biography

Birth in La Spezia, childhood with her grandparents, crisis of faith after the death of her brother Enrico, and return to the faith in Genoa in 1922.

Itala Mela was born in La Spezia, Italy, on August 24 or 28, 1904. Her parents, Pasquino Mela and Luigia Bianchini, were teachers and distant from the faith. She spent her childhood (1905-1915) with her maternal Catholic grandparents, receiving her first communion and confirmation in 1915. In 1920, the death of her young brother Enrico deeply shook her, leading her to atheism. In November 1922, she moved to Genoa to study classical literature. It was there that she went through an inner crisis and rediscovered her faith on December 8, 1922, after confessing to Father Marchisio.

    Life and Work

Involvement with the FUCI, consecration as a Benedictine oblate under the name Mary of the Trinity, and the writing of spiritual works.

In 1923, Itala joined the Italian Federation of Catholic University Students (FUCI), becoming a national leader and forming friendships with figures such as Angela Gotelli, Father Giovanni Battista Montini (the future Paul VI), and Cardinal Schuster. As her fragile health prevented her from entering a monastery, she became a Benedictine oblate in 1933 at the monastery of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, taking the name Mary of the Trinity. She made a fifth vow of consecration to the Indwelling of the Trinity and wrote numerous theological treatises and spiritual notes.

    Journey toward holiness

Mystical experiences, revelation of the Trinitarian Indwelling, physical trials, and death in 1957.

On August 3, 1928, in the church of San Francesco in Pontremoli, Itala experienced a major mystical event where she was called to make known the mystery of the presence of the Trinity in the hearts of the baptized. Despite heavenly visions, she endured severe physical trials, notably severe arthritis, and diabolical persecutions. She offered her sufferings for the Church and for priests, and passed away on April 29, 1957, in La Spezia. Her remains were transferred to the Cathedral of Christ the King in 1983.
