María Antonia Bandrés Elósegui, nicknamed "Antonita," was born on March 6, 1898, in Tolosa, in the Spanish Basque Country. The second of fifteen children of the lawyer Ramón Bandrés and Teresa Elósegui, she grew up in a deeply Christian home despite her fragile health. She studied at the San José school run by the Daughters of Jesus, where she met the foundress Saint Cándida María de Jesús, who predicted her vocation. From her adolescence, she engaged in charitable works for the female workers of Tolosa alongside her mother. In 1913, during a spiritual retreat in Loyola, she decided to dedicate herself entirely to God.
