Biography
The life of Elisa Martinez, from her birth in Galatina to her entry into religious life.
Elisa Maria Annunziata Antonia Giuseppa Martinez was born on March 25, 1905, in Galatina, in the province of Lecce (Apulia, Italy). She was the eldest of eight children born to Giacomo Martinez and Francesca Rizzelli. Despite her father's initial reluctance, she was baptized on April 16, 1905, in the parish of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles in Galatina. She received a solid Christian upbringing from her mother. From her childhood, she showed a particular sensitivity toward the destitute and children. In April 1928, she entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd in Chieti, where she received the habit on September 29, 1928, and pronounced her vows on September 29, 1929, under the name Sister Lucia. A serious pulmonary infection, however, forced her to leave the institute and return to her family.

In 1934, Elisa Martinez settled in Botrugno to dedicate herself to the education of young girls and parish service. On March 20, 1938, with the help of Father Luigi Cosi and the approval of Bishop Giuseppe Ruotolo, she founded the Pia Unione delle Suore dell'Immacolata. On August 15, 1941, Bishop Ruotolo established it as an institute of diocesan right under the name Figlie di Santa Maria di Leuca (Daughters of Saint Mary of Leuca). In 1943, the congregation obtained the decree of erection of pontifical right. The institute is dedicated to the formation of adolescents, early childhood education, assistance to single mothers, abandoned children, and marginalized persons. After rapid expansion in Italy and abroad, Mother Elisa Martinez resigned in 1987 for health reasons and passed away on February 8, 1991, in Rome.

The reputation for holiness of Elisabetta Martinez led to the opening of her cause for beatification. The diocesan inquiry opened on July 29, 2016, in the Diocese of Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca. The Roman phase began on September 14, 2018, at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. On October 13, 2021, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of the decree recognizing her heroic virtues, thereby declaring her Venerable.

On February 23, 2023, Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to her intercession, concerning the scientifically unexplained healing of a fetus in 2018. The beatification ceremony was celebrated on June 25, 2023, on the square of the Basilica-Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae in Leuca. It was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, representing Pope Francis. Her liturgical feast is set for February 8.
