Biography
The life of Blessed Michael Sopoćko, from his birth in 1888 to his death in 1975, marked by his priestly ministry and his role as a confessor.
Blessed Michael (Michał) Sopoćko was born on November 1, 1888, in Juszewszczyzna (also known as Nowosady), in the Oszmiana district, then under the rule of the Russian Empire (now in Belarus). Coming from a noble but impoverished family, he grew up in a deeply religious and patriotic atmosphere. Despite material difficulties, his parents ensured he received a solid basic education.
Feeling the call to the priesthood very early, he entered the major seminary in Vilnius in 1910. He was ordained a priest on June 15, 1914, by Bishop Franciszek Karewicz. He began his ministry as a vicar in Taboryszki (1914-1918), where he distinguished himself by his pastoral zeal, opening schools and mission chapels. Threatened with arrest by the German occupation authorities, he had to leave his parish and went to Warsaw. There, he became a military chaplain for the Polish army.
Alongside his service as a chaplain, he pursued higher studies at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Warsaw, where he obtained a doctorate in theology in 1926, as well as a diploma from the State Pedagogical Institute. In 1924, he was appointed coordinator of military chaplaincies for the Vilnius region. In 1927, Archbishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski entrusted him with the position of spiritual director of the major seminary in Vilnius. During this period, he also taught pastoral theology at the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius.
In 1932, he was appointed confessor to the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Vilnius. It was there that he met, in 1933, Sister Faustina Kowalska, an event that would change his life and definitively shape his ministry.
During the Second World War, wanted by the Gestapo because of his activities and his support for Jews, he had to hide from 1942 to 1944 in Juodšiliai, near Vilnius, under a false identity. After the war, facing Soviet persecution and the shifting of borders, he left Vilnius in 1947 to settle in Białystok, Poland. There, he taught theology, pedagogy, and philosophy at the diocesan seminary, while continuing an intense pastoral apostolate, particularly in favor of sobriety. He passed away on February 15, 1975, in Białystok, at the age of 86.
Life and Work
The foundation and development of the Congregation of the Sisters of Merciful Jesus, initiated according to the directives of Saint Faustina.
The life and work of Blessed Michael Sopoćko are inseparable from the foundation of the Congregation of the Sisters of Merciful Jesus (Zgromadzenie Sióstr Jezusa Miłosiernego), a religious institute for women of pontifical right born in direct response to the requests of Christ transmitted to Saint Faustina Kowalska. In 1935, Saint Faustina received revelations in which Jesus requested the foundation of a new religious community dedicated to the contemplation, proclamation, and imploration of Divine Mercy for the world. After the saint's premature death in 1938, it was Father Sopoćko who took charge of the realization of this project. The congregation began to take structure in Vilnius in 1941-1942. The first candidate, Jadwiga Osińska, took temporary vows in 1941. The following year, she was joined by five other companions. On November 16, 1944, in the chapel of the Carmelite monastery in Vilnius, the first sisters made their solemn profession of vows under the direction of Father Sopoćko, marking the official birth of the community. At the end of the Second World War, the sisters had to leave Vilnius for Poland. On August 25, 1947, they settled in Myślibórz, where their regular community life truly began. Father Sopoćko drafted the constitutions of the institute, drawing faithfully from the notes and spiritual directives left by Saint Faustina, and ensured the spiritual formation of the first religious sisters through regular correspondence. The congregation was canonically erected as an institute of diocesan right on August 2, 1955, by Bishop Zygmunt Szelążek, Apostolic Administrator of Gorzów. It received pontifical approval (decree of praise) on May 13, 2008, under the pontificate of Benedict XVI. Today, the Sisters of Merciful Jesus continue their mission through dozens of houses in Poland and abroad (notably in France, Italy, and several mission countries such as Bolivia or Sierra Leone). Faithful to the charism transmitted by their founder, they dedicate themselves to the propagation of devotion to Divine Mercy, the education of children, support for families in difficulty, and aid to the most destitute.
Path to Holiness
His crucial role with Saint Faustina, the creation of the first Divine Mercy image, and his theological defense of this devotion.
The path to holiness of Michael Sopoćko is intimately linked to his role as confessor and spiritual director to Saint Faustina Kowalska. When he met her in 1933 in Vilnius, he demonstrated great theological prudence. To discern the authenticity of the private revelations she claimed to be receiving, he required her to undergo psychiatric examinations and ordered her to record all her mystical experiences in writing. This is how the famous Diary of Saint Faustina was born.
Once convinced of the divine origin of these messages, Father Sopoćko became the tireless promoter of Divine Mercy. In 1934, he hired and paid the painter Eugeniusz Kazimirowski to create the very first image of the Merciful Jesus ("Jesus, I Trust in You") according to the saint's precise instructions. He also organized the first public exhibition of this image at the Gate of Dawn (Ostra Brama) in Vilnius, from April 26 to 28, 1935.
He dedicated the rest of his life to the theological defense of this devotion, publishing numerous works and petitioning ecclesiastical authorities for the institution of the Feast of Divine Mercy on the first Sunday after Easter. He endured many trials, notably when the Holy Office temporarily prohibited the dissemination of the devotion in its specific forms in 1959. Despite misunderstanding and suffering, he remained exemplarily obedient and faithful to the Church, confident that the work of Mercy would eventually triumph.
Beatification and canonization
The process of recognizing his heroic virtues, the approval of the miracle, and his solemn beatification in 2008.
The cause for the beatification of Father Michael Sopoćko was officially introduced in the Archdiocese of Białystok with the obtaining of the nihil obstat from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints on September 10, 1987. The diocesan inquiry took place from December 4, 1987, to September 29, 1993.
On December 20, 2004, Pope John Paul II promulgated the decree recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues, conferring upon him the title of Venerable.
In December 2007, Pope Benedict XVI officially approved a miracle attributed to his intercession, consisting of a scientifically inexplicable healing.
The solemn beatification ceremony took place on Sunday, September 28, 2008, at the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Białystok, Poland, where his body rests. The celebration was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and legate of Pope Benedict XVI, in the presence of more than 80,000 faithful, numerous bishops, and dignitaries of the Polish state.
His liturgical memorial is set for February 15, the day of his birth into heaven.
Spirituality and Legacy
A spirituality centered on absolute trust in Divine Mercy and his global theological legacy.
The spirituality of Blessed Michael Sopoćko is entirely centered on absolute trust in Divine Mercy, which he defines theologically as the greatest attribute of God. For him, mercy is not a simple indulgence, but an active and transformative force that goes out to meet human misery. He liked to repeat: "The Gospel does not consist in proclaiming that sinners must become good, but that God is good to sinners."
His legacy is immense. Without his theological rigor, his prudence, and his pastoral courage, the revelations of Saint Faustina would probably not have known the worldwide diffusion they have today. He laid the theological foundations that allowed Saint John Paul II to officially institute Divine Mercy Sunday for the universal Church in the year 2000.
In addition to the Congregation of the Sisters of Merciful Jesus, his work continues to inspire millions of laypeople, priests, and communities throughout the world, making him, alongside Saint Faustina, the great apostle of Divine Mercy for modern times.
