    Biography

    The youth of Eugenia Maria Ravasco, marked by family bereavements and her choice to dedicate herself entirely to God.

    Eugenia Maria Ravasco was born in Milan on January 4, 1845. She was the third of six children of Francesco Matteo Ravasco, a Genoese banker, and Countess Carolina Mozzoni Frosconi. Orphaned of her mother at the age of three, she was raised in Milan by her aunt Marietta Anselmi. In 1852, she joined her father in Genoa, but he died in 1855. The children were entrusted to their uncle Luigi Ravasco. Eugenia made her first communion and confirmation on June 21, 1855, under the guidance of Canon Salvatore Magnasco. After the death of her uncle in 1862, she refused marriage and decided, on May 31, 1863, to dedicate herself entirely to God. In 1867, she visited the sick at the Pammatone hospital.

    On December 6, 1868, Eugenia Ravasco founded the Congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Ravasco Institute) for the education of youth and assistance to the sick and poor. In 1870, she established the motherhouse at the Gropallo Palace in Genoa. She founded a women's normal school in 1878. The congregation received diocesan approval in 1882 and was aggregated to the Capuchins in 1883. In 1892, she created a Home for young working women in Genoa, followed by the Association of Santa Zita in 1898.

    Journey toward holiness

    The final years of Eugenia Ravasco, her death in 1900, and the introduction of her cause for beatification.

    Despite fragile health and trials within her community, Eugenia Ravasco continued her work. She died on December 30, 1900, in Genoa at the age of 55, consumed by illness. Her final words were: "I leave you all in the Heart of Jesus." In 1948, Cardinal Giuseppe Siri introduced her cause for beatification. She was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II on July 1, 2000.

    On July 5, 2002, Pope John Paul II approved the decree recognizing the miraculous healing of a young girl, Eilen Jiménez Cardozo, in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Eugenia Maria Ravasco was solemnly beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 27, 2003, in Saint Peter's Square in Rome.
