Biography
The youth, formation, and beginnings of the priestly ministry of Zefirino Agostini in Verona.
Zefirino Eusebio Policarpo Agostini was born in Verona, Italy, on September 24, 1813. The son of Antonio Ottavio Agostini, a physician, and Angela Frattini, he lost his father very early, the latter having died of cholera in 1814 after caring for the wounded from the Battle of Caldiero. Raised by his mother and paternal grandparents in Terrossa, he entered the diocesan seminary of Verona at the age of 18, where he studied under the direction of the Venerable Nicola Mazza. Ordained a priest on March 11, 1837, by Bishop Giuseppe Grasser, he began his ministry as a vicar at the parish of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, while also serving as vice-chancellor of the curia. In 1845, he became the pastor of this parish, a position he would hold for 51 years.
Life and Work
The pastoral dedication of Father Agostini and the foundation of the Ursuline Daughters of Mary Immaculate.
The ministry of Father Zefirino Agostini was marked by total dedication during the Italian wars of independence and the cholera epidemic of 1855. Faced with the precarious situation of the young girls in his neighborhood, he founded the Pious Union of Saint Angela on October 23, 1856, inspired by the rule of Saint Angela Merici, opening a free school in 1860. After a period of communal life for his collaborators under the direction of the Sisters of Mary Child, the community was canonically erected on June 21, 1869, by Bishop Luigi di Canossa under the name of the Ursuline Daughters of Mary Immaculate. The first professions took place on September 24, 1869. He died on April 6, 1896.
Path to Holiness
The introduction of his cause and the miracle of the healing of Sister Pierina Scarmignan.
The cause for beatification was introduced in 1966 in the Diocese of Verona. On January 22, 1991, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable, recognizing the heroic nature of his virtues. The miracle accepted for his beatification was the unexplained healing of Sister Pierina Scarmignan in January 1984. Suffering from a serious cerebral pathology (acute intracranial hypertension due to an expansive cerebral process) while she was a missionary in Madagascar, she was suddenly healed on January 23, 1984, after a novena of prayers addressed to the intercession of Father Zefirino Agostini. This miracle was officially recognized by papal decree on April 6, 1998.
Beatification and canonization
The celebration of his beatification by John Paul II and his liturgical memorial.
Zefirino Agostini was solemnly beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 25, 1998, in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican. His liturgical feast is inscribed in the Roman Martyrology on April 6, the day of his death. However, the Diocese of Verona and his congregation celebrate his memorial on September 24, the anniversary of his birth.
Spirituality and legacy
The educational charism of Father Agostini and the international expansion of his congregation.
The spirituality of Zefirino Agostini is based on an ardent pastoral charity, humility, and trust in Providence. Inspired by Saint Angela Merici, he valued the role of women in Christian education. Today, the congregation of the Ursuline Daughters of Mary Immaculate continues its work of education and social assistance in Italy, as well as in Switzerland, Benin, Togo, Madagascar, Uruguay, Chile, and Brazil.
