    Biography

Birth, childhood marked by bereavement, education with the Ursulines, and Annunciata Cocchetti's first educational initiatives in Rovato.

Annunciata Asteria Cocchetti was born on May 9, 1800, in Rovato, Lombardy. Coming from a wealthy family, she quickly lost her three younger brothers, her mother, and then her father at the age of seven. Raised by her paternal grandmother, she received her education with the Ursulines. From the age of 17, she opened a free school in her home for poor girls. After the closure of her school in 1822 due to an Austrian reform, she obtained her teaching diploma to teach at the municipal school. She refused to join the Canossian Sisters and rejected her uncle Carlo's marriage plans in Milan to dedicate herself to God.

In 1853, she founded the autonomous congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dorothy of Cemmo, dedicated to the integral education of young girls and the training of Christian educators. The miracle accepted for her beatification was the scientifically inexplicable healing, in 1947, of Bortolina Milesi, a 13-year-old girl suffering from an incurable malignant intestinal tumor. After prayers were addressed to Annunciata Cocchetti, the teenager was suddenly healed. This miracle was officially recognized by the Pope on July 10, 1990.
