Episcopacy and martyrdom
Bishop of Benearnum, Galactoire participated in the Council of Agde before being captured and put to death by the Arian Visigoths near Mimizan.
Galactoire attended th e Council of A gde (566), the canons of which were once adopted in all the churches of France; he subscribed to it with the title of Bishop of Benearnu m, a city believed to be that of Lescurre or Lesc ar. Th e following year, he was taken by the Ar ian Visigoths, n ear a place named Mimis an; the y tormented him for a long time to make him abjure the Catholic faith, and finally massacred him cruelly. The bishops, his successors, and all the people of his diocese, have always regarded him as a martyr.
Cult and fate of the relics
Honored in Lescar, his relics were preserved there until their destruction by the Protestant troops of the Count of Montgomery in 1569.
In accordance with the ancient breviary of Lescar, his memory is honored twice every year: on the day of his passing and on the day of the translation of his relics from the place where he was put to death to the city of Lescar. The bones of the Saint were kept in great veneration in the cathedral church of this city until 1569, at which time they were burned by the soldiers of the C ount of Montgomery, leader of the innov ators, and the reliquary that contained them was plundered.
