Blessed Gauthi er was born in Bruges. A doctor of theology, he was provincial of the Order in Tours when, against his will, he was raised to the episcopal see of Poitiers. Having had difficulties with Bertrand de Got, Bishop of Bordeaux, the latter deposed his adversary once he had become Pope under the na me of Cle ment V. Upon dying, Blessed Gauthier wrote a note in which he appealed from the Pope's judgment to the tribunal of God: Clement V, having come to Poitiers, wished to see this note and had the tomb opened for that purpose: seven years later, he went to render an account to God. To reward Gauthier's holiness on earth, the Lord had performed numerous miracles in his favor: it is said that a dove often hovered over his head and that this very dove was even buried with him. One day, when he had contracted an enormous debt to clothe the poor, a stranger, believed to have been an angel, took the form of the father procurator and paid the debt, without the latter's knowledge.
