The context of the Marseilles martyrs
Evocation of the Roman persecutions under Diocletian in Marseilles and the memory of Saints Victor, Adrian, and Hermes.
While the persecution of Diocletian and Maximian raged against the Church of God, Marseille s was red dened by the blood of many martyrs. Besides Saint Victor, whose cult is very well known throughout the universe, the memory of Saint Adrian and Saint Hermes is still preserved, who very courageously presented their heads to the executioners, after having resisted various torments for the faith of Jesus Christ. Several others, on the number and names of whom there is no agreement, suffered with them. Their bodies were formerly honored in the c hurch of Saint-Victor. An arm of Saint Adrian, enclosed in a silver reliquary, was preserved until the French Revolution.
There currently exists in Marseilles, on the beautiful Prado promenade, a parish church erected in 1855 under the patronage of Saints Hermes and Adrian.

After having given his flock admirable examples of holiness, he finally passed into the blessed eternity that he had always desired." Saint Abdalong was a co ntemporary of Charles Martel .
