SAINT DOMNIN OR DONNIS, BISHOP OF DIGNE (circa 379).
Origins and mission in the Alps
Originally from Africa, Domnin joined Marcellin and Vincent to evangelize the region of Nice and the Alps before settling in Embrun.
Domnin was African: inflamed with the zeal of the Christian religion, he left his parents and his homeland and, with Vincent, f ollowed M arcellin. He arrived with them at the castle of Nice, preached the doctrine of Christ in the region of the Alps, and assiduously seconded Marcellin, until the faith had taken root in the city of Embrun and in the surrounding countries. When the blessed Marcellin had been consecrated bishop of Embrun by Eusebius of Vercelli (before 376), Saint Domnin, wishing to propagate the faith further, chose the city of Digne to work for the destruction of the idolatry that still reigned there in all its strength.
The Evangelization of Digne
Sent by Marcellinus, Domninus and Vincent converted the city of Digne through their preaching, their simple life, and numerous miracles.
The blessed Marcellinus did not let Domninus and Vincent depart without reminding them of the precepts of the Lord to his apostles at the moment he gave them the mission to go and preach, warning them to recommend penance, to maintain a simple way of life, as well as a mutual and unalterable charity. Encouraged by this advice, Domninus and Vincent set out for Digne. Their arguments caused the cult of false gods to fall, their prayers brought faith down into hearts, and their miracles confirmed it. They healed a great number of languors, possessions, and illnesses of all kinds, as a testimony to the truth of their preaching.
Episcopate and defense of the faith
Consecrated Bishop of Digne by Marcellinus, Domnin protected his diocese from the Arian heresy before designating Vincent to succeed him.
Having come to consecrate a church erected in honor of the Mother of God, the blessed Marcellinus consecrate d Saint Domn in Bishop of Digne. Having become bishop during the very critical times of the Arian heresy, he did not let any of his sheep stray from the fold of the true faith. Feeling his end approaching, he exho rted Vincent to receive the charge and care of his flock, and migrated to the Lord on the 13th of February. God permitted for a long time that the infirm were healed and demons cast out at his venerated tomb.
