Mission in Upper Auvergne
Designated by Saint Peter as an auxiliary to Saint Austremonius, the deacon Mammet successfully evangelized the regions of Murat and Aurillac despite geographical difficulties.
Mammet , also named Mammerce, a deacon, was given as a companion and auxiliary to the bishop S aint Austremonius by the Prince of the Apos tles, and he came with this prelate into the Gauls. He evangelized with great success the lands of Murat and Aurillac (Cantal), in Upper Auvergne, with the cooperation of A ntoninu s, a person of great holiness and a disciple of Saint Austremonius. He was delayed neither by the difficult access of the mountains, nor by the ignorance and coarseness of the inhabitants; and he illuminated this entire region with the lights of the faith and the splendors of holiness and miracles.
Evangelization of the Limagne and end of life
Mammet continued his work in Lower Auvergne and accompanied Saint Austremoine in his final duties before dying and being buried in the town that bears his name.
Saint Austremoine sent these two heroes of the Gospel to also carry the good news into some parts of Lower Arvernia: and while Antoninus was withdrawing from the midst of their errors the barbarians who lived in the forests and who worshipped the idol of Mercury, and while he was laying the foundations of the town o f Gann at, on the Andelot (Allier), Mammet, traversing another part of the Limagne (a small region of France, in the north of Lower Auvergne, along the Allier, included today in the northern part of the Puy-de-Dôme department), brought a great number of pagans under the salutary yoke of the Gospel. Saint Austremoine having set out towards the mountains of Arvernia to assist at the final moments of Saint Maire, Saint Ma mmet accomp anied him. He followed him again when, called by Antoninus, he went to consecrate the church of Compains (Puy-de-Dôme, arrondissement of Issoire, canton of Besse). Finally, after great labors accomplished, Mammet rested in the Lord and was, it is believed, buried in the small town that bears his n ame. A collegiate church forme rly existed in this place; Jean Aycelin de Montai gu, Bishop of Clermont, gave it, in the 13th century, to the Chapter of the cathedral.
