Miracles Attributed Against Pain

Pain is frequent in saints' lives, but this page only retains episodes where it constitutes the main motif and is explicitly named. Sources speak notably of gout, headaches, toothaches, or persistent bodily suffering. Relief may be associated with a prayer, a tomb, a relic, or an object whose use has become part of a local devotion. Unlike the pages dedicated to mobility, skin, or fevers, this category requires neither paralysis, nor visible lesion, nor febrile state. It thus allows for observing how sensations that are difficult to show become narratable through a gesture, a place, or a collective practice. Terms are restored in their historical sense: the page does not deduce any modern pathology and presents no religious recourse as a medical solution.
