Miracles of Protection Against Fire
Fire appears in hagiography as an instrument of torture, a threat to a city or shrine, and a test for relics or sacred objects. Accounts then attribute to the saint a preservation, the extinguishing of flames, or the absence of expected burns. These situations are not equivalent: surviving a stake belongs to the language of martyrdom, while stopping a fire pertains to the protection of a community. The page brings them together because fire remains the common element, but it must make the scene and the beneficiary visible on each card. Celestial light without destructive heat does not belong to this category, any more than a storm that diverts a fleet. Texts are presented as hagiographic motifs and local memories. They provide no safety recommendations and must never be illustrated by graphic suffering.
