Animals in Saints' Miracles

Animals in hagiographic accounts can become companions, guides, protectors, or adversaries rendered harmless. A wild animal obeys, a bird indicates a place, a beast replaces a draft animal, or a group ceases to threaten crops. The motif often expresses a harmony attributed to holiness, but it gathers very diverse scenes that must be described without standardizing them. This page does not primarily concern the healing of an animal, nor the biting of a person, unless the account insists on the obedience or the transformation of the beast's behavior. It is also distinguished from fixed iconographic symbols: a lion painted beside a saint is not proof of a miracle if no source episode recounts it. Sancteo thus links narrative traditions to artistic attributes while maintaining the difference between told history, symbol, and patronage.
